Donal is a senior research scientist in the Data Science team.
He has worked as a government scientist for 30 years on a wide range of research and consulting projects. Highlights include nuclear waste containment, estimating the number of 5 cent coins in circulation, optimal wood cutting and logging truck scheduling, reviews of weather forecasts, defence spending, school payrolls, hoki quota, sports analytics and prostate cancer diagnostics.
Donal studied pure mathematics at the University of Otago and statistics, operations research and theoretical computer science at Victoria University of Wellington.
As a data scientist his main focus is on efficient inference and value optimisation
